Cue the music and change the day to Saturday and you're there - skiing ! only this time in California instead of some Austrian cow bell infested resort. California is not the first place on earth I would have thought of when the word "skiing" was mentioned but I have to say "Snow Summit" does the job. We headed off on Friday evening so that we could make an early start (by our standards) on Saturday morning. Traffic was pretty horrible, so it took about 3h40 to travel the 215km (average speed = 58km/h) climbing 2172m. The good thing was that we were then only 5mins from the base of the ski resort. The runs were pretty good; well groomed with only a few traces of ice every now and then - which was quite amazing considering the weather. Unfortunately, they were a little shorter than what we're used to in Europe, but at the same time the lifts weren't busy so we got a load of runs in. Johan, Freke and the three boys were also there. It was their second time EVER ! (and then I mean in terms of days - not ski holidays). Even so, Jelle and Gijs were hungry for a little more action so we headed to the top and started with a green slope to get a feeling for what they were capable of. Very much to my surprise they were well able to ski, so we gradually stepped the next couple of runs up. I'm pretty sure we accidentally hit a small red (length wise) along the way - but sure we all survived, so no harm done. All in all - really good fun !
The trip back along highway 18 "rim of the world" (yes - it's really called that) provided spectacular views. There's even a high school with the same name along the way (that's gotta look impressive on any CV). Unfortunately we forgot to bring our camera so for the mo all I've got is the following link. To be repeated at some stage ...

So you were there on Sunday too?
ReplyDeleteWe recovered on Sunday from our day of exciting blue slopes of the Californian Big Bear and Black Angus.
